The top of the holder has 3 hidden magnetic closures to securely hold down the sheets when in use. Update Sept 29,2021. Rhe magnets in the top of the desk pad are strong enough to turn off my laptop if I slide the laptop onto them. No, they don't mess up the hard drive. They are, however, triggering the mechanism that puts my Lenovo IdeaPad into sleep mode. I don't know if this would happen to other brands. I assume different laptops have different mechanisms? I don't know if there could be longterm effects. Moving this review down to a 3 star from 5 star because the magnet description didn't have a warning that they were stronger than average fridge magnets and could trigger something like this.Mid-Sept 2021: I'm very impressed by this desk pad. The color is great, and the white stitching looks really nice. The white stitching is a touch uneven but I had to look closely to evaluate that. There is nothing obvious or glaring.The paper is great quality, too, and I am very disappointed that I have been unable to figure out where to buy refills to match.Honestly, the pad looks too nice for my paint splattered laptop to sit on ;)
